How to Pack for a Week on a Sailing Holiday (and What to Leave at Home)

If you're counting down the days to your sailing holiday—first of all, lucky you! Whether you're cruising through the crystal waters of Croatia, Greece, or Italy, there's nothing quite like life aboard a yacht. But if you're staring at your suitcase wondering what to pack (and what you definitely don’t need), you’re not alone.

Here’s your go-to guide for packing smart, light, and with style for a week on the water.

Space is limited on a boat, and large hard-shell suitcases won’t do you any favors. Opt for a soft duffel bag or collapsible suitcase—something you can easily stow under your cabin bed. You’ll thank yourself when there’s room to move around.

You’ll be living in your swimwear and breezy clothes most of the time. Pack light layers that can mix and match. Bring 2–3 swimsuits, a few lightweight tops, a couple of pairs of shorts, and something casual for dinners ashore like a sundress or polo. A light jacket or hoodie is a must for cooler evenings. For footwear, stick to flip-flops, sandals, and a pair of trainers or boat shoes. Don’t forget a hat and a pair of sunglasses (ideally with a strap so they don’t fly off with the wind). Quick-dry fabrics will be your best friend at sea.

Bathrooms on yachts are compact, so bring only the basics—and keep it eco-friendly if you can. Reef-safe sunscreen is essential. A small toiletry kit with travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash is perfect. Add a toothbrush, toothpaste, wet wipes, and maybe some dry shampoo. Seasickness tablets are a smart "just in case" item, and a reusable water bottle will keep you hydrated in the sun.

Gadgets can make your trip easier. A portable phone charger or power bank is handy since outlets are limited. A waterproof pouch will help protect your phone during dinghy rides. Consider bringing an e-reader or book, a dry bag for excursions, and earplugs for light sleepers.

Now, what to leave behind? Heels and dress shoes won’t get any use, and a hair dryer or straightener will likely stay packed due to limited onboard power and humidity. Don’t overpack clothes—you’ll rotate through your comfy favorites. Most charters provide towels, but it’s worth double-checking with your crew before packing your own.

The beauty of a sailing holiday is the simplicity of it all. Don’t stress over packing like you would for a city trip. It’s all about ease, sun, sea, and salty hair. Bring the essentials, leave the rest, and you'll feel lighter in every way once you step aboard.

Now all that’s left? Grab your bag, step onto the deck, and let the wind guide your next adventure.
